Koger eager to play for Rodriguez at Michigan

By ZACH SILKA
BLADE SPORTS WRITER

Don't count Kevin Koger as one of the University of Michigan recruits waffling on his verbal commitment to the Wolverines next season. The Whitmer senior tight end/defensive end said he was "excited" when Rich Rodriguez was named the football coach at Michigan last month. Koger said he has spoken with Rodriguez "a couple times" since his hiring and is already familiar with him after taking an unofficial visit to West Virginia during his junior year. "It's a good situation for me," Koger said yesterday at Whitmer before departing with his basketball teammates to take on Libbey last night. "I went down there last year, and I met [Rodriguez]. He seemed like a pretty cool dude." The Panthers also ran a comparable offensive scheme to Rodriguez's no-huddle spread option this season after Whitmer coach Joe Palka attended a coaches clinic at West Virginia last spring.

Whitmer graduate could start for Michigan on Saturday
By JOE VARDON
BLADE SPORTS WRITER
ANN ARBOR ? Kevin Koger, a Whitmer High graduate and true freshman at Michigan, could start at tight end Saturday in the Wolverines? season opener against Utah, coach Rich Rodriguez said this morning.

Koger is listed on UM?s two-deep along with returning starter Carson Butler and fifth-year senior Mike Massey. As is the case with several positions on Rodriguez?s depth chart, there is no indication who will start among the three tight ends listed. Further illustrating the questions that remain in the days leading up to the Wolverines? first game under Rodriguez, both Nick Sheridan and Adrian High grad Steven Threet are listed at quarterback. Rodriguez said the two will continue to compete this week and likely will each see action against the Utes. Rodriguez said there was a four-way battle at running back between true freshmen Sam McGuffie and Michael Shaw, and veterans Brandon Minor and Carlos Brown. Two of them could start at the same time. At least one true freshman ? slot receiver Martavious Odoms ? will definitely start Saturday, while classmate Darryl Stonum is competing at both outside receiver spots.
