Coveted prospect eyes chance to showcase flexibility

(KDKA) MONROEVILLE The eyes of Terry Smith, head football coach at Gateway High School, light up when he talks about Shayne Hale, a prized football prospect and one of Smith’s most dangerous weapons on defense.

“He’s pretty soft-spoken, and he’s a nice kid,” said Smith.

It’s true that the senior linebacker is not flashy or loud like other young men who have fame thrust upon them at a young age. It might be easy to lose him in a crowd if not for one detail.

Another possible factor for Hale’s decision could come from Cameron Saddler. Saddler, Hale’s cousin, has also received scholarship offers from D-I schools, and there has been some talk that the pair could be a package deal. Hale, however, said that each will make the decision that is best for them.

“It would definitely be fun, just to have someone that you grew up with and played in high school with,” said Hale. “But I have still have to look at what will be good for me.”

WVU staff gunning for recruiting family plan

THOUGHT I'D bring West Virginia football fans a little recruiting news today.

Reason?

Cuz.

You see, the Mountaineers are recruiting two very talented cousins. And if WVU can land the services of one, they might just get both.

The pair being chased by Rich Rodriguez and company is Shayne Hale and Cameron Saddler of Gateway High in Monroeville, Pa.

Hale is considered the nation’s No. 1 linebacker by most recruiting services. When reached Thursday, he said he’s received “40-something’’ scholarship offers.

Saddler, meanwhile, said he’s at 23. A wide receiver, the rising senior is small, but explosive. And while Hale is an across-the-board five-star player, Saddler is nothing short of three.

The good news for Mountaineer fans: WVU is in serious contention for the pair’s services.

“West Virginia made my final four,’’ Saddler said. “I cut it down last week to West Virginia, Michigan, Virginia and Syracuse.’’

“I’m looking at West Virginia, Michigan, Ohio State and Virginia,’’ Hale said. “West Virginia has nice coaches. But all the schools are even right now.’’

Thomas Jefferson senior lineman Lucas Nix was selected to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl Jan. 5 in San Antonio. Nix is the fourth WPIAL played picked for the game, joining Jeannette quarterback Terrelle Pryor, Aliquippa receiver/defensive end Jonathan Baldwin and Gateway linebacker Shayne Hale.

High School Notebook: Top football players narrowing down lists

Gateway's Shayne Hale (6 feet 3, 235 pounds), ranked among the top linebackers in the country, has decided he will choose among West Virginia, Michigan, Virginia and Ohio State. He was offered scholarships by schools across the country, but neither Pitt nor Penn State made his final list.

"There is no big reason why," Hale said. "I just want to get away a little more than staying around here."

The skinny: Hale is ranked one of the top linebackers in the country, but he has been switched to defensive end for this season. Gateway coach Terry Smith said the move is best for the team and also said defensive end is the position Hale likely will play in college.
