Gateway LB Hale destined to hit - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review
Quote:
By Tricia Lafferty
TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Friday, August 24, 2007
Gateway senior linebacker Shayne Hale was 7 years old when he had the revelation.
Hale was watching a Steelers game with his father and made a bold statement for a kid who had never played organized football.
"I told him one day I want be out there, and he said, 'Your time will come. Do your best and it can happen,' " Hale said.
Ten years later, Hale finds himself rated as the No. 1 linebacker in the country, according to rivals.com, with more than 50 scholarship offers and inching closer to his dream.

Class AAAA: Five players to watch
Quote:
SHAYNE HALE -- GATEWAY FB-DE
Gateway's Shayne Hale doesn't look like your average 18-year-old.
"Sometimes we go to an under 21 club," said Gateway teammate Cameron Saddler. "He always gets carded because they don't believe he's under 21." The football field is the same for Hale. Often times, it's like he's a man among boys. Hale is a 6-foot-4, 235-pound senior at Gateway who can dominate opponents. He's a fullback on offense, but is known as a standout linebacker. He made the Post-Gazette Fabulous 22 as a junior, racking up 105 tackles, 58 solo and 13 tackles for losses. Rivals.com ranks him the No. 1 inside linebacker in the country and Super Prep the No. 2 linebacker overall. The funny thing is Hale won't play linebacker this year. He has been switched to defensive end. Gateway's coaches like the talents of linebacker Jim Wilson and also wanted to get him in the starting lineup. "This way, we get two of our best players on the field instead of one sitting behind the other," said Gateway coach Terry Smith. "We threw it out to Shayne in the summer months, and he was a little upset about it. But we sat him down and said this is what's best for the team. He said, 'Coach, if this is what's best for the team, then I'm for it.' "Defensive end is actually a nice fit for Shayne. It's probably where he'll play in college." Hale is being heavily recruited, but has narrowed his list to West Virginia, Michigan, Virginia and Ohio State. Hale and Saddler, a running back-defensive back, might go to the same school. -- By Mike White

...Gateway head coach Terry Smith thinks the two could end up at different schools. While Saddler likes many schools with Michigan, Virginia and West Virginia near the top, Smith thinks Hale will choose between Michigan and Ohio State in the end with the Buckeyes holding the slight edge.

Michigan's start has definitely affected both Hale and Saddler. Cam says he will reschedule for the Ohio State game but Shayne says he isn't sure if he will even visit.

Shayne has canceled his first scheduled official visit to Virginia and says he is not even sure if he will reschedule. He is going to hold off on recruiting for a while a focus on the season. He still has an official planned to WVU on 10/19 and maintains Michigan, Ohio State, Virginia and West Virginia as his four finalists.

From the UVA site...more of the same although does seem to favor WVU slightly over the other three schools he is looking at. Says he may not officially visit OSU because he has not heard much from them lately.

From the UVA site...stunningly glowing remarks (nothing against UVA...Shayne is just usually more reserved) about his visit to UVA this past weekend.

No to Michigan
Before Michigan lost to Ohio State Saturday, and before word got out that Lloyd Carr would be resigning as coach at the University of Michigan, two players from Gateway High had crossed the Wolverines off their final list.
Gateway running back/defensive back Cam Saddler and linebacker/defensive end Shayne Hale were supposed to make an official visit to Michigan this past weekend, but canceled it.
"We just don't think it's the best situation for either of us," Saddler said Friday night after the Gators defeated North Allegheny in the WPIAL Class AAAA semifinals.
That means Saddler will now choose between Pitt, West Virginia and Virginia. Hale's final three choices are West Virginia, Virginia and Ohio State. But he's not certain he will visit Ohio State, which means he probably will choose between West Virginia and Virginia.
