Gaglione commits to Iowa

Monday, December 17, 2007

Lake Catholic defensive end Joe Gaglione made an oral commitment to Iowa on Sunday, less than three weeks after the Hawkeyes were the first to offer him a football scholarship.
Indiana and Pittsburgh also made offers, and West Virginia and Penn State expressed interest in the 6-5, 225-pound standout pass rusher who had a breakout season this fall. Gaglione, a Novelty resident, transferred from West Geauga prior to his junior year and was slowed by an illness. This fall, he had 18 sacks and 16 other tackles for losses and 138 total defensive plays despite frequent double-teaming during the regular season. He helped lead Lake Catholic to the state semifinals.
"The atmosphere and the coaches at Iowa made it pretty easy for me to fit in," Gaglione said in a phone interview Sunday from Chicago, where he was stranded by a winter storm after visiting Iowa. "They'll use me as an end or stand-up linebacker." Gaglione plans to study sports medicine.

The Iowa football program entered its final recruiting weekend before Christmas with a few positional needs on its wish list.

The Hawkeyes came away with commitments from two productive high school players at spots where they needed help, adding a pass-rushing defensive end and adding depth in the offensive backfield when Joe Gaglione and Jewel Hampton joined the Iowa recruiting class.

Gaglione had 22 sacks as a senior at Lake Catholic High School in Mentor, Ohio. The 6-foot-5, 225-pounder said he had scholarship offers from Indiana and Pittsburgh and also was receiving heavy interest from Virginia, West Virginia and Penn State.

Gaglione said the Hawkeyes started expressing their interest in early November and offered a scholarship earlier this month.

"The people, all of the teammates, the coaches, it's one big family," Gaglione said. "Everybody gets along really well, and the facilities there are unbelievable -- the weight room, the field, the stadium -- it's just unbelievable."
