The newest commitment to Alabama's 2008 signing class happens to be one of the youngest graduating students at his high school.
Since offensive tackle Barrett Jones stands 6-foot-5, one would hardly guess he turned 17 in May. Consider what Jones has already accomplished on the football field a sneak preview. It's what he may soon be able to do that lured college coaches from across the country to Evangelical Christian School near Memphis.
"Another two years, when he grows into his body and he's really grown to be a man, I can imagine what he's going to be like and play like," ECS coach Jim Heinz said. "Colleges know what they're looking for and they see a lot in him."
And Jones saw enough in Alabama, the school where his father Rex played basketball in the early 1980s.
He formally committed Monday night to Alabama, giving the Tide the No. 15 player in the Press-Register's Super Southeast 120 and another piece in what's being projected as one of the nation's top recruiting classes.
Coach Nick Saban's first piece for 2009 fell into place with word Tuesday that former McGill-Toolen defensive tackle D.J. Fluker has committed as a member of the 2009 class.
Fluker, a 6-foot-6, 325-pound standout, transferred back to school in Biloxi this year. He is expected to be one of the top-rated prospects in the South in the coming year.
Jones held such a distinction this year, being roundly judged the top prospect in Tennessee. He had narrowed a long list of suitors to Alabama, Florida, North Carolina, Tennessee and Vanderbilt.
"Coach Saban said he was extremely happy about my decision," Jones said in a prepared statement. "He told me that I am an important part of this class because I have the ability, character and leadership to help build a great team. I am determined to do everything possible to live up to his expectations."
Evangelical Christian School used Jones at left tackle and defensive end.
"He handled most of the people he played against and he handled them well," Heinz said. "Let's say it that way."
Jones carries a 4.0 grade-point average and reportedly scored a 30 on his ACT. He plans to take honors classes at Alabama.
"About as good as you can find," Heinz said, "both in ability to play the game and character."
