Two years ago, E.J. Woods was in a whole different world.

Attending Santa Monica High School in California, Woods' grades were beginning to slip. As with most teenagers in public schools, he was concerned about popularity, what clothes he had on and being in the 'in' crowd. And while he excelled on the football field, he wasn't maximizing his potential.

It certainly wasn't the worst of situations, but something had to change.

That change came after his sophomore season, when Woods transferred to Crespi Carmelite, a private, college prepatory Catholic school about a 25 minutes up the 405 highway in Encino.

Scout.com: "Boots on the Ground": Mater Dei vs. Crespi

Quote:
Crespi's E.J. Woods is a UCLA soft verbal. He may be concerned about the coaching situation. He is being recruited as a safety although he plays running back and linebacker in high school. Scout has him ranked as the #10 safety prospect. Beyond UCLA, he has offers from Cal, WA, Michigan, Oregon & Penn State. Against Mater Dei he displayed a wide range of physical skills and clearly is a playmaker. When Centennial needed a play, Woods was available. On offense he demonstrated speed, vision and toughness. On defense he effectively negated Mater Dei's size up front with athletic skill and football instincts. Woods rushed for 125 yards on 19 carries including a 50-yard run for a TD. He ended Mater Dei's comeback attempt with an interception, he sacked Barkley, and I believe he also caused a fumble. He looks like a real good commitment for UCLA.

E.J. is still committed to UCLA but is going to take some visits in case Coach Dorrell is fired. He is looking to visit Colorado, Arizona State, UCLA and either USC or Arizona.

Scout.com: The Dorrell Promise

Quote:
By Allen Wallace
National Recruiting Editor
Posted Dec 3, 2007

"If he (Karl Dorrell) leaves that's something that I'll really have to sit down and talk over with my family," E.J. Woods said. "One of the main reasons I committed to UCLA was coach Dorrell and how he took a chance on me. My grades weren't good my freshman and sophomore year and coach Dorrell still offered me. He told me to promise him that I was gonna work hard and get my grades up and I did."

Defense again is the key for the Jackrabbits as Richardson's running and Telemaque's three interceptions lead the way.
December 9, 2007

On a rain-drenched field at the Home Depot Center, Encino Crespi and Long Beach Poly engaged in an all-out defensive struggle, each team daring the other to find a way to succeed.

Poly junior running back Melvin Richardson took on the challenge and delivered, scoring on touchdown runs of 69 and four yards to help the Jackrabbits defeat Crespi, 13-3, to win the Pac-5 Division title Saturday night.

Scout.com: Figuring Things Out

Quote:
By Allen Wallace
National Recruiting Editor
Posted Dec 19, 2007

E.J. Woods, Scout.com's No. 8 safety, admits that it's UCLA's coaching situation that has caused him to rethink his commitment. "I'd really like to see (interim head coach) DeWayne Walker get the head coaching job," Woods said. "He's the reason all the recruits are there and the reason defensive players want to go there. If he stays, I think everyone will stay. He changed the program around..."

From the UCLA site. Woods says he is still a soft verbal to UCLA, and would like to see what happens with the coaching staff. He says that Cal is coming on strong, and that he is hearing from Colorado and Washington a lot as well.
