Dwayne now has offers from East Carolina, Purdue, Temple, Toledo, Akron, Connecticut, Michigan State, Syracuse and Pittsburgh. He is also getting heavy interest from Rutgers, Tennessee and Alabama.

Dwayne Beckford, a 6-foot-1, 210-pound linebacker from Irvington, N.J., has verbally committed to play football at Purdue.

Beckford, a three-year starter, earned all-state honors as a senior after making 104 tackles, including 17 sacks. He also had four forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries, returning one for a touchdown.

He chose Purdue over Temple, after also receiving offers from Michigan State, Connecticut, Syracuse, Pittsburgh, Toledo, Akron and East Carolina.

"I picked Purdue because of the whole Big Ten thing, and I felt comfortable with their coaches," Beckford said Thursday. "I really liked the coaching staff, and the potential playing time that might be available to me.

"I wanted to play in the Big Ten or the (Southeastern Conference). I just like the Big Ten's style of play, smash-mouth football. I'll be playing weakside linebacker, and I'll have the freedom to roam around and make a lot of plays."
