Class AAA: Five players to watch
Quote:
LUCAS NIX -- THOMAS JEFFERSON OL-DL
Lucas Nix is ranked among the top offensive linemen in the country. College coaches recruited him as an offensive tackle. But Nix is so athletic his coach believes he might make an outstanding defensive lineman in college. "I think all those college coaches see him with those long arms and want to make him a great offensive tackle," said Thomas Jefferson coach Bill Cherpak. "I used to think he was offense for sure, but he does a lot of good things defensively. He moves really well, he has great hands and he's only going to get stronger. I wouldn't be all that surprised if he plays defense in college." Nix is 6 feet 6, 295 pounds. But he has great agility for a player his size. "The other night in our scrimmage [against South Park], he made some unbelievable plays on defense, just running people down," Cherpak said. Nix is a prized Pitt recruit, choosing the Panthers over offers from colleges across the country. Nix's brother, Nate, is a former Thomas Jefferson standout who is now a linebacker at Pitt. Before Lucas Nix heads off to Pitt, he has a high school season to think about. Thomas Jefferson is the Post-Gazette's No. 1-ranked Class AAA team in both the WPIAL and PIAA. "Lucas has been great. He's grown up and taken over a leadership role," Cherpak said. -- By Mike White

Nix proved to be the real deal not only on offense but on defense as well. He has impressive size and moves well for a big man. On defense, he gets down the line of scrimmage well and pursues plays. He needs to keep his feet more often and not get tangled up in traffic as much, but his future is on offense anyhow.
On offense, Nix gets off the ball well, uses his hands to lock up defenders and uses his size and agility to drive block. He didn't pull often as it was mainly smash-mouth football, but when he did he showed good mobility. And he consistently got to the second level.

PIAA Football/Class AAA: Thomas Jefferson advances
Quote:
In the first eight games of the season, Torres had 332 yards rushing. In the past six games, he has 1,019 yards.
"His center of gravity is so low," said Lucas Nix, Thomas Jefferson's outstanding lineman. "He gets hit, but even if he doesn't shed you, he'll still go forward for 5 or 7 yards."
Torres will be the first to point out how much Thomas Jefferson's offensive line means to his success. Nix, a tackle, is the leader, lining up at left or right tackle depending on the play. Besides Nix, the other interior linemen are Pat Eger, Dave Bishoff, Sean Kundrat and Rob McCall. Brock DeCicco, Zach's younger brother, is a tight end along with Matt Hufford.

By B. Lichtenfels. Nix talks about how hard the move from Tackle to Guard was this week at AA practice, and how he is much more comfortable playing Tackle. He enjoyed himself at the game, and had a good time getting to know future teamate Shayne Hale.
