Though DeMarcus Phillips may be a bit under the radar in terms of state-wide recognition, there is little doubt the athletic, competitive and versatile 6-foot-2 wing guard always had the respect of his peers in Milwaukee.

Just ask Milwaukee Washington coach Jay Kenseth.

“More and more people are hearing about him now, but I don’t think DeMarcus was ever under the radar in terms of his peers in Milwaukee,” Kenseth said. “They always knew he was a very good player.”

Kenseth said many NCAA Division I schools have expressed interest in Phillips, who likely will need to attend a junior college next season. Two-year schools from across the Midwest have initiated the recruiting process with Phillips.

“DeMarcus has always been able to get to the basket, but his jump shot is much improved this season,” Kenseth said. “He’s scoring from the outside and the inside for us. His overall game is progressing very well. All of his fundamentals are better. He’s handling the ball better, he’s shooting better and he’s passing better.

“But the biggest thing with DeMarcus is the leadership he has shown this season. He is making our team better because of his unselfishness.”
